Wrens are delightful little birds who secretively scurry around the undergrowth , going about their business . In celtic folklore , they symbolize , life energy and cleverness . In ancient times the wren would be hunted as a tradition on St Stephens day ( December 26th ) this is also known as "Wren day " the tradition has evolved and in modern times a "fake " wren is used rather than a real one  and it is then put on top of a pole and crowds of dancers known as "mummers" or "strawboys " who dress up in masks, straw suits, and colourful  clothing. They form music bands and parade through towns and villages.
